OK, so the body of my neighborhood is done. It's amazing that everytime I went upstairs (I live in a log cabin and sew in my loft) I would say, "just two more houses." It's almost complete, which is good since I get bored easily. I need some ideas on what to put around the outside border. I want wonky words, but each thing I think of doesn't seem to fit.I was thinking of giving the quilt to a kindly man in his 70s who is the contractor on the new church addition we are building (I volunteerf ull-time as a media specialist and creative arts person for our church). He has been so wonderful about all the delays, just last week we threatened to bring shovels ourselves and start digging for the foundation. Anyway, I want to do something nice for him and the "construction" of houses I would build seemed perfect. Trouble is, it doesn't really look like a "guy" quilt...maybe I should just finish and keep this one and do another that's a little more masquline for him. What do you think? And what words do I put on the border?

As to the "masculinity" of the quilt- I think a lot will depend on the fabric you choose for the borders. What do you think of "Rome was not built in a day"? This might be the reason he is so wonderful about all the delays you've had.

I can picture a wonky hammer and other tools in the border for a masculine touch.
ReplyDeleteI have a deep watery blue for the border...like the idea of tools to fill up space. Thought the letters could be in the fabrics I used for the houses.
ReplyDeleteIf you want words that specifically relate to the construction of a church, there is "Upon this rock, I will build my church," or "The wise man builds his house upon the rock."
ReplyDeleteQuilts are magical. A gift of a quilt is an amazing thing. Your friend would truly appreciate the quilt, regardless of whether he looks like a "quilt guy" or not.

I only got into gardening 16 years ago (I was 54) and I love the different colors in the foliage. I love the saying "The kiss of the sun for pardon, the song of the birds for mirth, one is nearer God's heart in a garden than anywhere else on earth"
